2022 FIFA World Cup: Who is the coach for Portugal?
Fernando Manuel Fernandes da Costa Santos GOM (born 10 October 1954) is a retired Portuguese professional football manager and defender. He is the national team manager of Portugal.
Over eight seasons, he played 161 games and scored two goals in the Primeira Liga, nearly always with Estoril. After retirement, he worked as a coach for several decades, beginning in 1988 with his major club.
Santos, who was born in Lisbon, completed his development at Benfica after joining the club’s youth system at the age of 16. His senior debut came with Estoril, for whom he went on to play at all three levels of Portuguese football.
On September 7, 1975, Santos made his Primeira Liga debut, playing the full 90 minutes in a 2-0 home win over Farense. He ended his first season with 12 more appearances, propelling his side to eighth place.
Santos scored his first goals in the top flight in 1978-79, missing only one league game on his way to an 11th-place finish. He returned to his previous club and played for them for another eight years (five in the Segunda Liga) before retiring at the age of 33.
