Following Alexa Cruz’s untimely death in a car accident, a memorial volleyball tournament has been planned to remember her life.
Cruz, a junior at Cesar Chavez High School, died in a car accident on Feb. 3 while travelling from Goodyear to an Austin volleyball event after their flights were canceled due to inclement weather.
Cruz’s family leased an SUV with two other families to make the journey together.
After hitting black ice, the automobile lost control and collided with an 18-wheeler. Alexa perished at the site, while her Venom Volleyball Club colleagues Vanessa Ramirez and Gabby Romero, as well as Alexa’s mother, were injured and rushed to the hospital.
Six people were sent to the hospital with various injuries.

Alexa’s funeral date and time is yet to be disclosed to the general public.
But a tribute will be held on April 2 and 3 at Bell Bank Park in Mesa.
The community has gathered over $190,000 in donations through their GoFundMe account since the tragedy.
According to a press release, the revenues from the memorial tournament will go to the families’ assistance fund.
