Hazard Community and Technical College reports that Osborne, a native of Hyden, Kentucky, passed away on Tuesday morning.

He and his brother Sonny co-founded the bluegrass band, which made its stage debut in Knoxville in the early 1950s. In 1964, the trio joined the Grand Ole Opry, and in 1994, it was admitted to the International Bluegrass Hall of Honor.

In 2021, Sonny Osborne passed away at the age of 84. The group’s musical style and compositions had a significant impact on the bluegrass genre, according to music historians.

According to music critic and historian Wayne Bledsoe, “they had very distinctive three-part harmonies and a lot of bluegrass acts were influenced by that.”

The group’s rendition of “Rocky Top,” which was penned by Country Music Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame members Boudlueux & Felice Bryant, was released on Christmas Day 1967.

East Tennessee and the University of Tennessee came to be associated with the Brothers Osborne’s version of the song. In 1982, the Tennessee General Assembly declared their rendition to be the state anthem.
