Börje Salming, a legendary NHL defender who spent 16 years as a mainstay on the blue line for the Toronto Maple Leafs, has passed away. Age-wise, he was 71.
Salming’s passing was revealed by the Maple Leafs on Thursday afternoon.
President and Alternate Governor Brendan Shanahan released a statement in which he described Böjje as “a pioneer of the game and a legend with an indomitable spirit and unquestionable tenacity.” He made it easier for Europeans to play in the NHL and established himself via his on-ice performance and community service.
“The Maple Leafs welcomed Börje 50 years ago, and he will always be a member of our hockey family. His wife Pia, his kids Theresa, Anders, Rasmus, Bianca, Lisa, and Sara, as well as his brother Stieg, are all recipients of our sincere condolences.”
Salming received a diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, better known as Lou Gehrig’s disease or ALS, a degenerative neurological condition, earlier this year. In his home Sweden, he had been receiving medical attention.
Salming, a pioneering star in Europe who was born in the northern Swedish town of Kiruna, played 1,099 games with the Leafs and now holds the fourth-highest career point total on the team with 768 points.
He was selected as one of the top 100 players in NHL history in 1997 by a jury made up of retired players, coaches, business leaders, and media people.
Salming’s number 21 was retired in 2016 along with other legendary Leafs players including Dave Keon, Johnny Bower, and Doug Gilmour, and it now hangs in the rafters of Scotiabank Arena. Additionally, he joined figures like Bower, Darryl Sittler, and Ted Kennedy as the fourth former Maple Leaf to get a statue honoring him at Maple Leafs Square’s Legends Row.
Borje Salming Wife
Börje Salming, a former Swedish professional ice hockey defenseman, is married to Pia Salming. In 2016, Pia Salming and Borje Salming got hitched.
Hockey icon Borje Salming and Pia, who was born on November 13, 1967, started dating before getting married in 2016. They first connected when crossing the land Sea, and they have been in a relationship ever since.
Pia used to be a hairdresser, just like her mother, but she’s now switched to being a police officer.
Despite having desired to be a police officer since she was a young girl, Pia made a different professional choice. When Pia was little, she used to visit her mother’s hair salon. She went where her mother had gone since she felt comfortable there.
