Jenny was found dead in her home in Castro Valley, California, two days after her 14th birthday. Her attacker escaped.
The local sheriff’s office has worked tirelessly on this case, but no suspects have been established. The criminal act’s cause is unclear.
Murderer took advantage of detectives’ limited information to commit crime. The FBI was called in to help with the local police investigation. The FBI conducted lab tests and research to build a killer profile.
Police once investigated Sebastian Shaw, a serial killer. In Oregon, he died the year before. Shaw was convicted of killing Jay Rickbeil in 1991, Todd Rudiger, 29, and Donna Ferguson, 18, and given three life sentences.
1995: He admitted raping a woman. Shaw claimed he killed over ten people. He said he’d only provide more information if authorities prevented his death.

Jenny’s family was devastated by her death, so they set up a toll-free hotline, organized a blue-ribbon dance fundraiser, and distributed pamphlets. None of the tips led to Jenny’s killer’s arrest.
In her honor, the Jenny Lin Foundation has given away music scholarships and run free music programs for the community for more than 20 years. It’s also held safety fairs, workshops, and competitions to educate parents and children.

DNA helped solve Jenny Lin’s murder
Alameda County Sheriff Greg Ahern said investigators used new DNA technology to find out who killed Jennifer “Jenny” Lin over a decade ago. Sheriff believes technology will help investigators find new evidence and cells.
Her family organizes an annual memorial service and candlelight march to keep her memory and the search for her murderer in the public eye.
A $100,000 prize is offered for information leading to the identification and conviction of her killer.
The FBI and Alameda County Sheriff’s Office have both asked for the public’s help and urged anyone with information to come forward.
