Authorities confirmed Wednesday that one of the two Pierce County Sheriff’s deputies wounded in a gunfight while attempting to capture a guy south of Tacoma, Washington, had died.
Dominique Dominique Calata, 35, was killed in a gunfight near Spanaway on Tuesday, according to a Pierce County Sheriff’s Department statement.
Rich Scaniffe, 45, was identified as the other deputy. Scaniffe had surgery at St. Joseph Medical Center and was in critical condition.
He is anticipated to make it out alive.
Calata was brought to St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Tacoma following the incident, according to the News Tribune.
He had worked for the sheriff’s department for almost six years and was also a member of the National Guard.
Calata formerly served in the United States Army for five years.
He had graduated from Pacific Lutheran University.
