De La Soul is an American hip hop group that was founded in the Amityville neighborhood of Long Island, New York, in 1988.
They are most well-known for their unusual lyrics, varied sampling, and contributions to the development of jazz rap and alternative hip-hop subgenres.
Posdnuos, Trugoy, and Maseo created the group while still in high school, and a demo tape of their song “Plug Tunin'” helped producer Prince Paul take notice. The band’s debut album, 3 Feet High and Rising, has been hailed as “a hip-hop classic” for its inventive sampling, amusing wordplay, and humorous skits.
Did De La Soul get their masters?
De La Soul has finally acquired the rights to their masters. De La Soul even made their whole repertoire available for free download in 2014 in an effort to increase the accessibility of their music for both new and seasoned fans.
After Tommy Boy repurchased the group’s masters from Warner in February 2019, there appeared to be some optimism. However, plans to make the group’s first six albums available on streaming platforms were shelved when De La Soul objected and said they would only be receiving 10% of the earnings. Even worse, those “pennies” would have been used to settle a “phantom $2,000,000 debt,” according to the label.
