Onika Tanya Maraj (Nicki Minaj ) was born on December 8, 1982, in Port of Spain, Trinidad, and Tobago, in the Saint James district. Robert Maraj (1956-2021), a financial executive and part-time gospel singer of Dougla (Afro-Trinidadian mother and Indo-Trinidadian father) ancestry, was her father. Carol Maraj, her mother, is also a gospel singer of Afro-Trinidadian ancestry. Carol worked in the payroll and accounting departments when Minaj was younger. Minaj’s father was an alcoholic and crack cocaine addict with a violent temper who burned down their home in December 1987. She has a younger brother named Micaiah, an older brother named Jelani, and a younger sister named Ming.
Minaj was raised in Saint James, Jamaica, with her grandmother and her older brother, Jelani, along with 11 other cousins. She left Minaj and Jelani in Trinidad with their grandmother and later relocated to the Bronx in New York City to attend Monroe College. When Minaj was five years old, Carol finally purchased her first home on 147th Street in South Jamaica, Queens, and moved Minaj and Jelani in with her and their father. Minaj stated, “I don’t think I had much discipline in my family. My mother encouraged me, but we were not a strict family. I sort of desired a strict household.” Minaj was accepted into Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music, Art, and Performing Arts, which focuses on visual and performing arts. Minaj wanted to be an actress after graduation, and she was cast in the Off-Broadway play In Case You Forget in 2001.
