Longtime baseball catcher-turned-commentator Tim McCarver, who won the Ford C. Frick award from the National Baseball Hall of Fame and won two World Series with the St. Louis Cardinals, died Thursday at age 81. McCarver’s death was announced by baseball’s Hall of Fame, which said he died Thursday morning in Memphis, Tennessee, where he was with his family.
McCarver, who played for four teams in a career that spanned from 1959-80, was best known for his time in St. Louis. There, he was a two-time All-Star and a key part of world championship teams in 1964 and 1967.
Did Tim McCarver retire from broadcasting?
McCarver retired from broadcasting last year. “I think there is a natural bridge from being a catcher to talking about the view of the game and the view of the other players,” McCarver told the Hall in 2012, the year he and Buck were given the Ford C. Frick Award for excellence in broadcasting.
