Allegheny College stated on Wednesday that assistant men’s basketball coach Greg Bean has died of a heart attack. Bean had previously won District 9 basketball titles as both a player (Clarion Area) and a coach (Redbank Valley).
Bean, a product of Clarion University, helped lead Clarion Area to a 2003 District 9 title as a player before returning to the school as an assistant coach from 2008 until 2010, when he accepted the head coaching position at Redbank Valley.

During his tenure as Bulldogs head coach from 2010-2015, Bean led the team to its first district title since 1980. In the same year, the Bulldogs reached the PIAA quarterfinals for the first time in school history.
Following the 2015 season, Bean began his coaching career at Buffalo’s Medaille College. Bean was an integral part of the 2017 and 2018 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) regular season and tournament championships for the Medaille Mavericks, as well as an appearance in the NCAA Division III Championship.
Bean moved on from the Yellow Jackets after the 2018 season to become an assistant coach at Waynesburg College, where he led the team to its most conference victories in three years (7 in the President’s Athletic Conference).
Bean has been an assistant coach at Allegheny for the past four years, and he was an integral part of the Gators’ Pacific Athletic Conference title run this year.
Bean has significant roots in the District 9 community thanks to his family. His father, Terry Bean, is a longtime District 9 official, and his mother, Gayle Truitt-Bean, coached gymnastics at Clarion University.
Erin Bean Halteman, his sibling, followed in his footsteps and became a collegiate athletic administrator and communications director.
