In order to parry in Elden Ring, the player needs to press L2/LT once an enemy attack is about to land. The only thing that matters when it comes to parrying is the timing.

It’s best to use the Stealth system in Elden Ring for Backstabs, though, as it’s a very effective means of initiating combat without being noticed. Once behind your target, press the light attack button corresponding to the hand holding your weapon, usually this will be the right shoulder button (or R1).

This is a brand-new mechanic introduced in Elden Ring which can be done by doing a Heavy Attack after a successful block. To do so, simply press L1/LB to block an attack and immediately press R2/RT to perform a Guard Counter. Landing a successful Guard Counter also requires a bit of timing but it is not as strict as riposte.

Elden Ring gives players a number of ways to get a critical hit on enemies. From Guard Counters to Sleep Arrows, there are more ways to critically damage enemies in Elden Ring than in any other FromSoftware game. One method is as old as the Souls series itself: Parrying.
