In September 1996, Vili Fualaau entered seventh grade. This was the time when Letourneau was pregnant with his first child. On May 23, 1997, Letourneau gave birth to a baby girl, thus making Fualaau attain fatherhood at the age of 14. Letourneau named her daughter ‘Audrey’.
In 1996, Fualaau became the student of Letourneau again. At the time he was 12 years old. His teacher, Mary, was 30 years old. She was married to Steve Letourneau with whom she had had four children. Mary found talent in the 12-year-old Vili Fualaau and started giving him increasing attention.
She gave birth to daughter Audrey that May, making Fualaau a father for the first time at age 14. Fualaau’s mother received temporary custody of the child. At first, Fualaau kept his identity hidden during the legal proceedings against Letourneau.
Married teacher Mary Kay Letourneau took her student Vili Fualaau under her wing and encouraged his artistic talents. During the summer after his sixth-grade year, Fualaau celebrated his 13th birthday. Shortly after, he became sexually involved with Letourneau.
