Here in Arizona, one of the last confirmed survivors of the Pearl Harbor attacks passed away.
Jack Holder, who was 101 years old, died away on Sunday.
On December 7, 1941, Holder, a Navy machinist, was 19 years old and stationed in Honolulu.
In a 2019 interview with KJZZ News, he discussed what happened on that terrible morning.
Holder remarked, “My division had just come in for muster.” “We heard a screeching aircraft as soon as the section leader began roll call, followed by a terrible explosion. When we fled the building, the first explosion dropped in Pearl Harbor right next to us in a hangar.
Holder recalled escaping the bombardment from a bombed barracks while unsure of their future.
Holder flew more than 100 missions during World War II as a Navy aviator, both on the European and Pacific fronts. Holder was honored by the president and given two Distinguished Flying Cross Decorations for his service.
Holder was reluctant to share his tale for many years despite his heroism. Holder told me that changed when he realized how important it was to hear a first-hand account of history, particularly to younger generations as a frequent speaker at schools, before returning to Hawaii to mark the 80th anniversary of the attacks in 2021.
“It feels fantastic. It gives me tremendous pleasure to speak to these young students in class when I can see that they are enjoying it “said he.
