American actor, playwright, screenwriter, and director John Cameron Mitchell was born on April 21, 1963.

In the 2022 Peacock short series Joe vs. Carole, he portrayed Joe Exotic. Hedwig and the Angry Inch, which he wrote, directed, and starred in, is the film for which he is best known. Mitchell came out as non-binary in 2022, however he still favors using the he/him pronouns while speaking.

Mitchell was reared on numerous military locations in Kansas, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, and Germany after being born in El Paso, Texas. Major General John Henderson Mitchell, his father, served as the American Commander in West Berlin from 1984 to 1988. His mother, Glasgow, Scotland native Joan Cameron Mitchell, moved to the US when she was a young child to pursue a career as an art instructor.

Mitchell played his first professional theater role in an Organic Theater production of Huckleberry Finn at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre in 1985.

His first New York acting performance was as Huck Finn in the Broadway production of Big River (1985). He originated the character of Dickon in the Broadway production of The Secret Garden, and he was a founding cast member of the off-Broadway play Hello Again.

He can be heard in every role on the original cast recordings for which he received Drama Desk nominations.
