Fatal DUI Crash Claims Life of 78-Year-Old Man in Redding: Suspect Arrested
In a tragic incident on Saturday in Redding, a fatal accident claimed the life of 78-year-old Jose Luis Zuno, who was pronounced deceased at Mercy Medical Center in Redding. Authorities have arrested Daveiontay Norwood, 31, the driver of the other pickup truck, on multiple DUI-related charges. The Redding Police Department reported that Norwood was speeding along Hartnell Avenue when he collided with Zuno’s truck as it pulled out of a driveway.
This unfortunate incident highlights the serious dangers associated with drunk driving. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), nearly 30 people lose their lives each day in the United States due to drunk-driving crashes, translating to one person every 50 minutes. The annual toll exceeds 10,000 deaths in drunk-driving-related accidents.
An independent investigation will be crucial to uncover other potential factors in the case, including the results of tests to determine Norwood’s blood-alcohol content.
Candice Bond, a seasoned DUI accident attorney and Managing Partner of Bond Legal, emphasized the legal options for victims’ families in such cases. She stated, “Separate from criminal charges, a victim’s family may be entitled to compensation through a civil lawsuit against the responsible party. In addition to the diligent work of law enforcement, an attorney can re-interview important witnesses, analyze surveillance video, and obtain phone records of the liable party. As an advocate, an attorney can compassionately guide grieving families, protecting their legal rights while ensuring that drunk drivers are held accountable.”
Pending the investigation’s results, the family of Jose Luis Zuno may have grounds for a wrongful death claim, covering medical and funeral expenses, loss of love and companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional trauma.

Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal, explained, “An incident is considered a wrongful death when a person or entity commits a wrongful or negligent act resulting in a person’s death. When vehicle accident fatalities result from unsafe driving, aggressive or distracted driving, speeding, or driving under the influence, family members are usually left with the option to pursue a civil action against the responsible motorist.”
