Julie Chen Biography
Julie Chen was born in Queens, New York to parents who emigrated from China.
Wang Ling Chen, Chen’s mother, is a native of Rangoon, Burma.
Her dad, David Chen, escaped to Taiwan from China during the Chinese Civil War.
Chen’s maternal grandfather, Lou Gaw Tong, was raised by a polygamist community of nine wives and eleven children after rising from “dirt poor” beginnings in the rural village of Penglai in Fujian province, China.
There are two older sisters in Julie’s family: Gladys and Victoria.
Chen went to school in the Whitestone district of Queens during his junior high years.
Chen continued his education and graduated from St. Francis Preparatory in 1987. She earned her BA and MA from USC in broadcast journalism and English, respectively, in 1991.
Career
In June of 1990, she worked as an intern at CBS Morning News, the series she would anchor ten years later, answering phones and copying faxes for distribution alongside Andy Cohen.
She worked as a desk assistant for ABC NewsOne for one season the following year while still in school.
Following that, she spent the next three years in a higher position as a producer after being promoted.
She moved to Dayton, Ohio in 1994 and worked as a local news reporter for WDTN-TV there until 1997.
While working as a reporter in Dayton, Ohio, Chen was told by her news director that she would never make it as a news anchor because of her “Asian eyes.” Chen shared this story on The Talk in 2015. She decided to have surgery to remove the epicanthic folds from her eyes after a “big-time agent” agreed with her and suggested it.
Chen, along with Bryant Gumbel, Jane Clayson, Hannah Storm, Harry Smith, Maggie Rodriguez, Erica Hill, and Rene Syler, anchored CBS Morning News and CBS This Morning/The Early Show from 1999 to 2002.
She co-hosted The Early Show on CBS from 2002 until 2010, when she stepped down from the daily gig but stayed on as a contributing anchor until the show was canceled. She previously worked as a reporter and weekend anchor for New York’s WCBS-TV before joining CBS News.
Starting on October 18, 2010, Chen served as both host and moderator of The Talk, a daytime talk show on CBS.
On it were Chen, the show’s creator Sara Gilbert, Sharon Osbourne, Leah Remini, Holly Robinson Peete, and Marissa Jaret Winokur.
After a number of sexual assault allegations surfaced against her husband Les Moonves, Chen announced in a prerecorded tape on September 18, 2018, that she would not be returning to The Talk because she needed “to spend more time at home with [her] husband.”
In September 1991, after she had completed her studies at the University of Southern California with a double major in broadcasting and English, she began working as a news assistant for ABC News in Los Angeles.

Les Moonves had just signed a five-year, multimillion-dollar contract with Viacom.
It took nearly two years to finalize the divorce because the couple could not agree on a financial settlement.
As of the 10th of December, 2004, Moonves had the court grant him an uncontested divorce, with alimony and child support to be determined at a later date.
In a small ceremony held in Acapulco, Mexico on December 23, 2004, Chen and Moonves exchanged their vows.
Charlie Chen was born to the couple on September 24, 2009.
During the first week of Season 4 of The Talk, which aired in September 2013, Chen revealed that she had blepharoplasty at the beginning of her career due to pressure from her former news director and a prominent agent. She explained her choice to Chen as “Her family was “divided,” but she insisted, “I have to live with every decision that I’ve made, and it got me to where we are today.” And I have no plans to turn around.”
She first used her married name on the September 13, 2018 episode of Big Brother, saying, “I’m Julie Chen Moonves,” in response to the sexual misconduct allegations made against her husband Les Moonves earlier that year.
This was a departure from her usual practice of signing off simply as Julie Chen. Reactions to the closing scene were mixed on social media among viewers and devotees. CBS announced in a press release dated November 27, 2018, under her assumed name of “Julie Chen Moonves,” that she would return as host for Season 2 of Celebrity Big Brother.
Stoke illness
Tulsa, Oklahoma’s KJRH NBC news anchor Julie Chin recently admitted she had the “beginnings of a stroke” on air. The newscaster was delivering her Saturday morning report when she began to fumble over her words and appear to be unable to read her notes.
It was as if the incident had come out of nowhere. After a great night of sleep, I felt fantastic before our performance. However, things began to unfold over the course of several minutes during our newscast,” Chin wrote in a detailed Facebook post.
In the beginning, Chin “lost partial vision in one eye,” and then “a little bit later my hand and arm went numb,” she said. When my lips refused to form the words on the teleprompter, I knew I was in deep trouble.
the host “desperately tried to steer the show forward but the words just wouldn’t come,” she said.

I am relieved to report that all of my lab results were within normal range. The doctors believe I may have experienced stroke symptoms but not a full-blown attack. “There are still a lot of questions, and a lot to follow up on, but ultimately I should be fine,” she said.
After further testing and investigation into what may have happened to her, Chin said she would return to her news anchor chair to share more stories.
