Lee Ellis, a well-known Houston restaurateur who worked at places like State Fare Kitchen & Bar, Lee’s Fried Chicken & Donuts, Pi Pizza, Petite Sweets, Lee’s Creamery, Star Fish, Liberty Kitchen, and the former BRC Gastropub, has passed away from unidentified causes.

He was 63. Ellis relocated to the Hill Country in recent years, taking up residence in Round Top where he established Ellis Motel and a barbecue spot called Round Top Smokehouse.

Near the end, his position in the Houston restaurant industry was precarious because Lee parted ways with Cherry Pie Hospitality, which he co-founded, in 2018.

The restaurant company sold its four locations—Pi Pizza, Star Fish, and Lee’s Fried Chicken and Donuts—for less than a million dollars the following year after being hit with numerous lawsuits. In 2015, Eater Houston reported that Ellis, who was working for the F.E.E.D TX Restaurant Group at the time, was determined to establish as many restaurants as she could.

From fried chicken to ice cream, Ellis’ restaurant portfolio frequently welcomed comfort foods. He made a big entrance with BRC Gastropub close to Memorial Park. In 2012, Ellis told Eater Houston about Liberty Kitchen: “We get no credit from any of the food writers in this area.”
