The Chatham County Sheriff’s Department issued the following statement:

The death of our beloved friend and coworker, Cpl. Ava Lucas, occurred on Sunday, August 28. We share this news with heavy hearts and great sorrow. In recognition of her contributions to the team since joining on August 13, 2007, we promoted Cpl. Lucas to the rank of Corporal on February 8, 2020. In this time of sorrow, please remember Ava’s family in your prayers.

Since she joined the CCSO on August 13, 2007, Corporal Lucas has been an asset to the force. “Her smile could brighten up any room,” Sheriff John Wilcher remarked.

“She never asked for anything for herself when she came to us for help; it was always for somebody else.” She had many admirers and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. While we go through this, please keep Ava’s family, friends, and the CCSO family in your prayers.
