Richard J. Riordan, a Queens-born attorney, businessman, and former mayor of Los Angeles, passed away on Wednesday at his home in the Brentwood neighborhood of the city. He presided over the city during a period of great division and used a free-enterprise strategy to rebuild the city’s infrastructure after a devastating earthquake in 1994. He was 92.

His death was confirmed by Patricia Riordan Torrey, his daughter.

Mr. Riordan started his career in business before transitioning to politics later in life. His unvarnished words occasionally brought him into difficulty. He was chosen as mayor.

In his first attempt at electoral politics, he won the mayor’s office in 1993. He held the position until 2001, when term limits barred him from running for a third term.

Prior to that, he was an astute investor who grew a little inheritance into a sizeable personal wealth. He was a venture capitalist in the 1960s, before such investors had earned the moniker, and he donated his own money years before California’s newly wealthy took up philanthropy.

Mr. Riordan, a moderate Republican, entered politics in 1992 after it became evident that Tom Bradley, the Democratic incumbent mayor who had served five terms, would not run for reelection. Friends encouraged Mr. Riordan, who was 62 at the time, to run in part because to his strong contacts across the political spectrum.
