The Routt County Sheriff’s Office in Colorado reports that  Ryan Peerenboom who is from Kentucky perished in a skiing accident there on Friday.

At the Steamboat Ski Resort in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, the accident took place.

By Ryan Adrian, patrol lieutenant for the Routt County Sheriff’s Office, a 65-year-old Louisville man who was skiing with a relative fell into a tree well.

The man was given CPR, and was sent to a nearby hospital, but Adrian said that once there, the hospital declared him dead.

The Routt County coroner could not be reached, however, OutThere Colorado stated that the victim’s name was Thomas Rhodes.

According to the National Ski Areas Association, a tree well is an area of snow next to a tree where the snowpack is typically not as dense as a typical, groomed route. Skiers or snowboarders involved in tree well accidents plunge into the deep snow well, where they become immobile and suffocate.

“The issue is that most people don’t fall in feet first when they fall in. Since they have nothing to push off of when they fall in and their heads slide down and in, they are unable to get out, Adrian said.

Adrian admitted that he didn’t know the depth of the well that Rhodes fell into.
