Authorities in Arizona are looking into a fatal bear attack that happened early on Friday.

A Tucson man was reportedly murdered by an unprovoked bear assault in the Groom Creek region, roughly 6 miles outside of Prescott, according to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office.

The man, identified as 66-year-old Steven Jackson, was being attacked by a bear at his campground just before 8 a.m., according to the sheriff’s office.

Jackson reportedly struggled with the bear, according to neighbors. They tried to scare the bear away by making sounds and calling 911 for assistance. According to Arizona’s Family, it wasn’t enough to convince the animal to stop.

According to deputies, the bear dragged the victim about 75 yards before starting to eat him. The attack persisted until a neighbor shot the bear.

When the police arrived, they discovered Jackson and the bear had died.

According to reports, Jackson was nearby constructing a cabin. The man’s out-of-state family has been informed.

The bear was a 6- to 10-year-old black bear, according to Arizona Game & Fish.

The public is not now thought to be in danger, according to the authorities. Sheriff David Rhodes stressed that although there had been no complaints of any local wildlife acting aggressively, the attack appeared to be of a predatory nature.
