During the grueling mountain ride from Briancon to Alpe d’Huez, the 22-year-old Briton, who rides for Ineos Grenadiers, broke away from the peloton alongside compatriot Chris Froome.
Pidcock, who also won the world cyclo-cross title earlier this year, descended expertly before crossing the finish line in 4h 55’24”, but emotion soon took over.
Second-placed Intermarche-Wanty-Gobert Materiaux’s Louis Meintjes finished 48 seconds behind Pidcock, while Israel-Premier Tech’s Froome also finished on the stage 12 podium.
