According to his family, Celtic icon John Hughes died at the age of 79.

The Parkhead hero and Lisbon Lion died in hospital after a brief illness. The former Celtic hero was diagnosed with cancer last week, and his family has now issued a statement confirming his death.

Who is John Hughes wife Theresa Hughes?

During his eventful life, he was married to Theresa Huges.

He had children with her who now survive him.

Hughes, nicknamed “Yogi,” made 416 appearances and scored an amazing 189 goals for Celtic over 11 seasons, and was part of the group that blazed a route to the 1967 European Cup victory, almost missing the Final due to injury.

Despite playing during the record run, he got a winners’ medal and is the club’s ninth all-time leading scorer. His family’s message, shared on social media by son John, paid respect to him.

Hughes had already scored in Celtic’s semi-final success against Leeds United at Hampden earlier that year, and he left the club in 1971 with six league championships, four League Cups, and one Scottish Cup to his record.

He subsequently went south to Crystal Palace before finishing his playing career with a brief stint at Sunderland. He also represented Scotland eight times. Hughes then managed Stranraer for a brief time before becoming the inaugural manager of the Scotland Juniors international team.
